Your First Appointment: What to Expect at True North Psychiatry & Wellness
Taking the first step toward mental health support is a significant decision. Often, the anxiety of not knowing what to expect can cause people to delay the care they deserve.
At True North Psychiatry & Wellness, we believe that clarity is the foundation of a therapeutic relationship. We want your onboarding experience to feel seamless, transparent, and entirely supportive.
Here is exactly what you can expect during your first meeting and the simple steps we take to prepare for your journey.
1. The Pre-Appointment Checklist
Before we ever sit down together, our practice works behind the scenes to build your administrative and clinical foundation. When you schedule your initial evaluation via our live calendar, we ensure that:
Mandatory Contact Fields: We securely collect your essential contact details, ensuring we have a direct, reliable line of communication.
Insurance & Portal Setup: We cross-verify your insurance details or private-pay preferences securely to avoid financial surprises down the line.
Correct Patient Information: We ensure all documentation strictly matches the legal and clinical identity of the person receiving care, protecting your privacy and billing integrity from day one.
2. A Comprehensive Review, Not a Checklist
Your first appointment is a dedicated, 60-minute initial comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. This session isn’t about checking off generic symptom boxes. It is an intentional conversation where we examine the whole picture:
Current Concerns: We talk openly about what you are experiencing today—whether it relates to focus, mood changes, sleep disruptions, or physical anxiety.
Deep Medical History: As an integrative practice, we look beyond the brain. We review your complete physical history, active medical conditions, and current prescriptions to rule out physical illnesses presenting as psychiatric concerns.
Family history (to the best of your knowledge) - genetics inform heritable conditions and sometimes, guides treatment therapy selection
Social supports/interpersonal relationships: We explore the people and connections around you—family, friends, and community—since strong interpersonal support often plays a meaningful role in recovery and long-term mental wellness.
Lab Collaborations: If you haven't had blood work completed recently, we will discuss ordering targeted lab panels to evaluate potential vitamin deficiencies or hormonal imbalances.
3. Collaborative Treatment Mapping
We wrap up your first session by co-creating your personalized care roadmap. You are an active participant in this process. Depending on your unique biology and goals, your plan may include:
Evidence-Based Medication Management: If medication is appropriate, your prescriptions are handled safely and directly through our fully integrated electronic health record system.
Integrative Strategies: Merging clinical precision with lifestyle, nutritional, or biological interventions tailored to you.
Primary Care Coordination: With your consent, we coordinate directly with your primary physician or other specialists to ensure your physical and mental care are perfectly aligned.
Establishing a Safe Space
Your initial evaluation is designed to be a thoughtful, unhurried space where you are truly heard. Our administrative protocols are simply there to handle the paperwork in the background, leaving our face-to-face time completely clear to focus on you.
